How can I get used to wearing hearing aids?
Posted on Mar 19, 2015
Being fitted with hearing aids can be an exciting time, as for many it signals the start of a new period of hearing in their lives. However, other people may find it difficult at first to get into the habit of putting their hearing aids in each day, which can have a negative affect on what and how they hear.
The biggest contributor to the success of your hearing aids is your attitude toward them. When you have first been fitted it is likely that you will need to make a conscious effort to wear them every day in order to adjust to them and make them a part of your everyday life.
It can take anywhere from 18 to 254 days to form a new habit to the point where it becomes routine, according to a 2009 study called 'How are habits formed: Modelling habit formation in the real world1', and those who perform their desired behaviour more consistently are most likely to succeed. This means it may take time for you to automatically put in your hearing aids every day, but it is achievable.
Some people find they can wear their hearing aids all day right from the start. However others adjust better by gradually increasing the time from a couple of hours daily.Once you've adjusted to them, you can lengthen the amount of time you wear them until you have them in for most of your waking hours until they find they are happily wearing them for most of their waking hours.
If you find some new sounds overwhelming when you're getting used to wearing your hearing aids, it may be because you haven't heard them since before you had hearing loss. If the noises are too much for you at first, limit the amount of time you spend in those locations or only use your hearing aids in quieter locations as you adjust.
Remember, your local hearing care clinician is able to help if you have any difficulties adjusting.
If you or someone you know is considering hearing aids, a FREE hearing check may be necessary. Click here to book an appointment at your local HEARINGLife or call 1800 340 631.
